We hear a lot about omega-3 acids and their role in supporting heart health and preventing strokes. But have you ever wondered what omega-6 acids do for your body?
It is one of the types of polyunsaturated fats that the human body cannot produce itself, but nevertheless, it remains necessary for the normal performance of its functions. According to the Harvard Health Publishing website in America, omega-6 acids can contribute to the following: They are also found in many foods, according to the Cleveland Clinic website in America, including: In general, men need about 17 grams per day of omega-6 acids, while women need about 12 grams.
However, these fats do not have the same healthy reputation as omega-3 fatty acids. The body can convert the most common type of omega-6, linoleic acid, into another fatty acid known as arachidonic acid.

The body can also convert arachidonic acid into molecules that help calm inflammation and reduce the formation of clots.
In a two-year scientific review, nine independent researchers from across the United States, including three from Harvard University, concluded that the results of dozens of studies support the benefits of consuming omega-6 fatty acids for cardiovascular health. Therefore, the Mayo Clinic website in America advises reducing consumption of sources of saturated fats, such as meat, dairy products, and baked goods.
For example, butter used in cooking can be replaced with vegetable oils rich in omega-6 acids, such as soybean oil or corn oil. Brazil nuts or walnuts can also be eaten as snacks between meals, as they are rich sources of omega-6 acids.
