The US Defense Department (the Pentagon) excluded a number of European countries, including Britain, France, and the Baltic countries, from participating in the meeting of the working group of NATO member states, according to what was reported by the newspaper "Politico", citing diplomatic sources. The newspaper's sources reported that the meeting would focus on discussing the future of NATO, but representatives of many countries did not receive invitations to attend.
In this regard, a diplomat from one of the excluded countries stated: “We are doing everything that is asked of us, and we are trying to understand the criteria and objectives of these meetings, but not much has been communicated to us yet.”
There are fears in diplomatic circles that this selectivity pursued by Washington will lead to a reformulation of the entire alliance.
Diplomats also acknowledged that the US moves caused disappointment among its allies, especially since many of these excluded countries have practically met the defense spending targets set by the administration of US President Donald Trump.
One of Politico's sources warned: "If Washington tries to divide NATO into good allies and bad allies, this will pose a danger to the United States itself, and as for Europe, this represents an existential threat."
