The Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, affirmed that his country and the region faced exceptional events that once again demonstrated the strength of state institutions, the cohesion of society, and the ability to deal with crises efficiently and responsibly, stressing that the security of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and the protection of their sovereignty and stability are matters that cannot be neglected.
The Emir of Qatar said, in his speech during the opening of the second regular session of the second legislative term of the Shura Council, corresponding to the fifty-fifth annual session, that the State of Qatar was subjected to an attack on its territory by Iran, in violation of its sovereignty, the provisions of international law and the principles of good neighbourliness, praising the performance of the armed forces and security services in defending the homeland, and remembering the martyrs who gave their lives in defense of Qatar.
He stressed that his country's adherence to dialogue and peaceful solutions does not mean negligence in defending its lands, and that its right to defend its sovereignty does not conflict with its keenness to prevent the expansion of the circle of war, stressing that Qatar has always preferred to resolve differences through dialogue, negotiation and diplomatic means.
He pointed out that recent events have once again confirmed the interconnectedness of the security of the region and the world, and that destabilization anywhere cannot be isolated from the rest of the world, in addition to the importance of continuing cooperation and coordination between the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
The Emir of Qatar stressed the need to redouble efforts to secure navigation in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, and to protect energy and water facilities and civil infrastructure, noting that his country will continue to work with its brothers and regional and international partners to maintain the security and stability of the region.
Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani explained that during the crisis, Qatar assumed three responsibilities at the same time: protecting its sovereignty, fulfilling its role in energy security and the global economy, and keeping the doors of diplomacy open.
He added that the state, from the first moment of the crisis, placed human protection, securing their needs, and enhancing economic activity at the top of its priorities, and its agencies worked in cooperation with the private sector to diversify supply routes and secure basic goods and strategic stocks.
On the economic issue, the Emir of Qatar said that the national economy faced the crisis based on a strong base, after achieving real growth of 2.9% in 2025, with the average annual inflation rate stabilizing at 0.5%, and achieving a current account surplus, in addition to the country maintaining its high sovereign credit ratings and continuing to grow the stock of foreign direct investment.
In the energy sector, he pointed to the continuation of the North Gas Field expansion work in accordance with the established plans to increase the country’s production capacity of liquefied natural gas, pointing out that the Golden Pass project in the United States has made remarkable progress.
He also stressed the continued expansion of Qatar's energy investments and international partnerships, in parallel with the development of petrochemical industries, solar energy projects, and the enhancement of water security.
