The Trump administration issues a new decision regarding immigrants from Sudan and Ukraine

The US Department of Homeland Security said that immigrants from Ukraine and Sudan are expected to be allowed to continue living and working in the United States at the present time, after protections preventing their deportation were scheduled to expire this week. Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is a form of humanitarian relief that provides people fleeing war, natural disasters, or humanitarian crises with temporary permission to remain in the United States without fear of deportation.

According to federal data, by March 2025, there were more than 100,000 Ukrainians and more than 1,790 Sudanese registered in this program. The temporary protected status of Ukraine and Sudan was scheduled to expire on Monday.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said in a statement to Ufoq News that statements regarding temporary protected status for Ukraine and Sudan "will be released in due course," and that until those announcements are made, Ukrainian and Sudanese migrants in the United States are protected, the spokesperson said. The Trump administration, which has ended temporary protected status for several countries in its efforts to limit immigration, took a similar approach to citizens of El Salvador earlier this year, allowing them to retain protection pending an announcement.

Trump administration officials have repeatedly argued that these authorizations are temporary and not a permanent solution, and have criticized previous administrations for repeatedly extending them. In June, the US Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to end temporary protection from deportation for hundreds of thousands of foreign nationals from Haiti and Syria who had suffered from wars and natural disasters.

People who lost temporary protected status faced fear and confusion, as they risked detention and deportation at any time. Citizens of El Salvador who spoke to Ofoq News last month also expressed growing concern that their days in the United States may be numbered.
