As Israel awaits the legislative elections on Tuesday, the Israeli army announced the detention of an Egyptian civilian after he crossed the border fence at night.
The army said in a statement that it detained the Egyptian citizen after he crossed the border fence from Egyptian territory to Israel near the Nitzana area.
He also stressed that he "deals with the incident very seriously and continues to maintain his forces at a high level of defensive readiness in the region."
In addition, the army indicated that it transferred Al-Masry to the security forces for additional interrogation, without providing further details.
This incident comes as Israelis head to the polls, in the first elections since the October 7, 2023 attack led by the Hamas movement, in an entitlement seen as a referendum on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Netanyahu is waging an intense battle to remain in power in the face of what is known as the “Camp for Change,” a bloc that includes parties extending from the center-right to the left, which have pledged to overthrow him and his far-right allies.
While the Israeli forces raised their alert and preparations in anticipation of any emergency, especially after the Hebron incident and the escalating tensions in the West Bank.
