The world's only trillionaire, Elon Musk, has become the largest known donor in the midterm congressional elections, giving more than $276 million since last July, in an attempt on his part to save the current Republican majority in Congress.
The New York Times was the first to publish these numbers before the deadline for donors to reveal their donations to the candidates this week, and then they were confirmed by Andrew Romeo, spokesman for Musk’s super PAC.
Musk's donations include $158 million given to the Senate Leadership Fund, which is the main supporter of Republican candidates in Senate elections, and is one of the largest known political donations in American history.
Musk also provided $76 million to the US Political Action Committee, which is a major committee that is also affiliated with Musk, and is working to build a huge system to mobilize voters behind Republican candidates, similar to what it did in the previous US presidential elections in favor of President Donald Trump.
This represents a radical shift compared to last May, when Musk said that he intended to reduce his political spending in the future, saying at the time: “I think I have given enough.”
Despite the injection of this money, Musk generally kept his political appearance limited in the midterm elections compared to his role in the 2024 presidential elections, when he appeared on the stage next to Trump at campaign rallies, or in the first days of the president’s second term, when he assumed leadership of the “Ministry of Government Efficiency.”
The relationship between Musk and Trump witnessed tension during his departure from his government position, but they later reconciled, as the US President awarded him the “National Medal of Science” last week.
Republicans enjoy a huge financial advantage compared to their Democratic counterparts, a disparity that represents a rare strength for a party preparing to face potentially large electoral losses, in light of strong frustration among voters with the performance of Republican President Trump, the continued rise in prices, and the war against Iran.
