Libyan parliament members voted today, Monday, to amend the internal regulations of the council, in a step that paves the way for the reformation of a new presidency and the election of a new president, amid ongoing debate about the future of the current president, Aguila Saleh.

MP Issam Al-Jahani stated on his Facebook page that the council voted to amend the internal regulations with 98 votes, announcing the suspension of the session designated for selecting a new presidency.

The parliamentary session in Benghazi was chaired by the second deputy to the council president, Misbah Doma, with the attendance of 102 MPs, where members discussed the amendment of the internal regulations before voting on it with a majority of 98 votes.

According to sources from "Al-Arabiya.net/ Al-Hadath", it was agreed to end the work of the current presidency led by Aguila Saleh starting today, and the nomination for a new presidency will be opened, with voting scheduled for next Monday under the chairmanship of the oldest member.

This step is expected to pave the way for the election of a new president of the Libyan parliament to succeed Aguila Saleh, who has been in charge of the council since 2014, at a time when calls have intensified within the parliament to reconsider the composition of the presidency and the mechanism for its selection.

This comes a day before an anticipated parliamentary session tomorrow, Tuesday, in Benghazi, called by Aguila Saleh to discuss amending Law No. (4) of 2014 and including a parliamentary term, in addition to examining the constitutionality of the laws submitted by the "4+4" committee, which have been approved by the council, in preparation for their inclusion in the constitutional declaration.

The Libyan parliament has recently witnessed tensions regarding Aguila Saleh's continued position, amid moves to reconsider the composition of the presidency and the mechanism for its selection.

The amendment of the regulations comes at a time when disagreements continue within the parliament regarding the management of the upcoming political phase and the mechanisms for rearranging the divided institutions, amid a stalled political process aimed at ending the division between the east and west of the country.
