The Saudi Space Agency and the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) signed a memorandum of cooperation to strengthen the partnership between the two countries in space activities and the use of outer space for peaceful purposes, in a step aimed at expanding areas of scientific, technical and industrial cooperation, and supporting research and development in the space sector.

The memorandum extends to the fields of space science, exploration and applications, in addition to developing space technologies and services, and enhancing cooperation between industrial, academic and research institutions in the two countries.

Areas of cooperation include the use of the space environment, various space applications, space transportation, as well as scientific research and development of technologies related to space activities.

These areas provide opportunities to exchange expertise and scientific knowledge between the two sides, and to benefit from research and technical capabilities in developing solutions and applications related to the space sector.

Cooperation with JAXA is important given its experience in space exploration programs, scientific research and technology development, which opens horizons for specialized cooperation between the relevant authorities in the two countries.

The scope of the memorandum is not limited to technical and research aspects, but rather includes education, awareness, training and human capital development, with the aim of supporting the preparation of specialized competencies in space science and technology.

It also includes strengthening academic and industrial cooperation, allowing for expanding the participation of universities, research institutions and companies operating in the sector, and linking scientific activities with technical and industrial development opportunities.

The memorandum comes in the context of Saudi Arabia’s drive to develop the space sector and enhance its presence in the fields of research, innovation and advanced technologies, through cooperation with specialized international bodies.

Expanding partnerships with international space institutions represents one of the paths supporting building national capabilities and developing the research and industrial system, in line with the goals of diversifying the economy and strengthening the technical and knowledge sectors within the framework of Saudi Vision 2030.

It is expected that the joint projects and programs will be determined according to what the two sides agree on later, as the announced information did not include details about budgets, timetables, or specific space missions.
