Sudan complains to Ethiopia to the UN Security Council over a “flagrant attack”

The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced, on Sunday, the filing of a complaint against Ethiopia with both the UN Security Council and the African Peace and Security Council, against the backdrop of what it described as a “blatant attack” from within Ethiopian territory on civilian sites in Sudan using drones. The ministry said in a statement: “The government of Sudan has filed a complaint against the government of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia with both the Security Council and the African Peace and Security Council against the backdrop of the blatant attack from within Ethiopian territory on civilian sites, objects, and power stations in a number of states of Sudan, which caused civilian casualties and disruption of essential services for citizens.”

The statement indicated that the government "attached all documents confirming the use of the rebel Rapid Support militia on Ethiopian territory to launch suicide marches equipped with missiles targeting civilian objects and vital facilities." The Sudanese Foreign Ministry also stated in its statement that the Rapid Support Forces’ use of “Ethiopian territory to target Sudanese territory is a hostile act that places Ethiopia before international law and holds it accountable for violating Article (4) 2 of the United Nations Charter.”

According to the statement, Sudan called on Addis Ababa “to stop these hostilities, and also urges the international community to do its part in holding the terrorist militia accountable and applying international law to the Ethiopian government.” Earlier, on Sunday, the Sudanese government condemned “repeated attacks on facilities and service facilities in the country and their targeting through marches launched from within the State of Ethiopia,” according to the official Sudan News Agency (SUNA).

On Saturday, Egypt condemned Sudanese installations and facilities being attacked by drones, and Khartoum accused Addis Ababa of being behind them. Egypt stressed "the importance of stopping the flow of weapons through Sudan's neighboring countries to the Rapid Support Militia," renewing its "full support for Sudan's unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, the necessity of preserving its national institutions, and the importance of neighboring countries respecting Sudan's sovereignty and security and not interfering in its internal affairs."

It is noteworthy that Ethiopia previously accused Sudan and Egypt of supporting Ethiopian opposition groups currently waging battles against the government of Abiy Ahmed Ali, accusations that the two countries denied.
