Tel Aviv - Afaq News - Western sources reported that the United States has granted Israel a "green light" to expand its operational freedom in the airspace adjacent to Iraq, allowing it to carry out attacks against militias and armed organizations linked to Iran, according to the website "Irm News."
The sources indicated that the American administration is aware of the Israeli plans aimed at preventing the entrenchment of Iranian-backed militias in the region, while Washington is simultaneously preparing to enhance its defensive systems to protect its remaining forces and interests in the Middle East, and to work on building a regional defense system in anticipation of potential retaliatory actions and widespread escalation following any Israeli attack.
The report comes amid Western intelligence estimates indicating that the Israeli army and the Mossad have completed a series of operational preparations in anticipation of possible airstrikes and operations targeting the headquarters and weapon depots of armed organizations loyal to Tehran within Iraqi territory.
Israeli concerns about a land corridor linking Iran to Lebanon
According to the sources referenced in the report, one of the main concerns within the Israeli security establishment is the implications of the withdrawal of American forces from the region.
Israel estimates that a reduction in the American presence may allow for the establishment of a continuous land corridor linking Iran to Lebanon through Iraq, a route sometimes referred to as the "Shia Crescent."
According to the report, the United States and Israel estimate that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard is increasingly using this route to transport advanced military equipment, precise ballistic missiles, long-range drones, as well as financial and logistical assistance aimed at rebuilding the capabilities of militias and Iran's allies in the region.
Consequently, one of the objectives attributed to Israeli plans is to target supply routes that pass through Iraq, in an attempt to prevent the country from becoming a major rear base for the transfer of Iranian military means.
Militias refuse to relinquish strategic weapons.
In contrast, reports in Iraqi media indicate difficulties facing the government's efforts in Baghdad to confine weapons to the hands of the state.
According to "Irm News", despite the extension of the deadline granted to armed groups to hand over their weapons and integrate their members into official security forces until mid-2027, major organizations, including Hezbollah Brigades and Al-Nujaba Movement, refuse to give up their arsenal of weapons.
According to estimates reported by Iraqi reports, militias differentiate between light and medium weapons, for which they show some flexibility regarding their submission to state authorities, and weapons classified as "strategic."
This category includes, among other things, long-range drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. According to the same reports, militias seek to retain these means as an independent military capability, which is said to be directly linked to the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
Political analyst Yassin Al-Dweish told "Irm News" that recent developments place Iraq between Iranian influence and the possibility of a direct Israeli military operation on its territory.
He added that the Iraqi government seeks to present the withdrawal of American forces as part of completing national sovereignty, yet the ground reality, according to him, indicates the continued operation of military structures linked to Iran and other regional entities within Iraq, without full oversight from the central government.
Al-Dweesh added that the U.S. military withdrawal does not eliminate the pressure tools that Washington possesses over Baghdad, noting that the United States still enjoys significant economic and financial influence through mechanisms linked to Iraqi oil revenues and the U.S. financial system.
According to Al-Dweesh, if Washington concludes that Baghdad is granting permanent legitimacy to the activities of militias, or that it is unable to curb them, it may use financial tools and impose restrictions on money transfers.
He pointed out that such a scenario could also lead to a reduction in potential American opposition to Israel carrying out attacks against the militias.
At this stage, there is no official confirmation from the United States or Israel regarding what was mentioned in the report, which is based on Western sources that spoke to the 'Erm News' site.
