US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he is holding talks with Russia and China regarding nuclear disarmament.
Trump added, in an interview with the strongly conservative American network Newsmax, that he would like to move forward with the nuclear disarmament process.
He continued: "I would like to remove nuclear weapons if that were possible. We are actually holding talks on this matter with Russia and China."
Trump said that China's nuclear arsenal still lags behind that of the United States and Russia, but he expects that Beijing can catch up with the United States within the next five years. China is therefore less willing to disarm and talks are ongoing regardless, he said.
He said: "Therefore, they are indicating that China is less willing. But we talk...we talk about this matter a lot." Trump did not disclose further details.
Trump had previously indicated that there were talks between the three countries regarding nuclear disarmament, without providing information about specific negotiating rounds or results.
China rejected disarmament talks with the United States and Russia in 2020.
A report issued by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute states that Russia has 5,420 nuclear warheads and the United States has 5,042 nuclear warheads. As for China, it is seeking to expand its nuclear arsenal faster than any other country. The institute estimates that China presented several new nuclear systems in its 2025 military parade and now has about 620 nuclear warheads in total.
