US President Donald Trump published the phone number of Republican Senator from Arkansas, Tom Cotton, and called on residents of the state to contact him to press for the passage of a bill ending changing the clock twice a year, in a public escalation of the dispute between them over daylight saving time.
Trump said, in a post on the “Truth Social” platform, that Cotton, whom he described as “a friend of mine,” is obstructing the “Sun Protection Act,” calling on the people of Arkansas to “get it done,” and calling on the Senate to hold a vote on the project.
Trump noted that the House of Representatives approved the project by a majority of 308 votes to 117, and said that installing daylight saving time would provide more daylight during the afternoon, which he considered beneficial for sports activities, agriculture, and others.
On the other hand, Cotton defended his position, saying that Congress had previously approved permanent daylight saving time and then backed away from it after Americans faced the problem of delayed sunrise during the winter.
Cotton wrote on the “X” platform: “No one likes changing the clock, including me, but Congress approved permanent daylight saving time more than once and then canceled it each time after Americans experienced an absurdly late sunrise in the winter.”
He added, "Arkansans don't want their kids to go to school in complete darkness, and I will always put Arkansas first."
The “Sunlight Protection Law” aims to adopt daylight saving time throughout the year, instead of moving the clock forward and backward twice a year. The disagreement between Trump and Cotton focuses on the implications of this change, especially the morning hours during the winter months.
