Report: Trump intends to appoint the Director of National Intelligence responsible for the artificial intelligence file

US President Donald Trump, according to what was reported by several media outlets on Friday, intends to appoint the current Director of US Intelligence, Jay Clayton, to the position of government authority on artificial intelligence affairs.

Trump said at the beginning of this week that he would soon announce the name of the person he chose to take over the file, succeeding David Sachs, who left his position at the end of March.

CBS television indicated that Trump may keep Jay Clayton in his current position, provided that this new mandate is added to his powers.

The sixty-year-old Clayton assumed the position of Director of National Intelligence (“DNI”) shortly before, following the Senate’s approval of his confirmation in late July. Before joining the Trump administration, he had served as federal prosecutor in Manhattan since April 2025.

Between 2017 and 2020, Clayton also headed the US Securities and Exchange Commission, which supervises financial markets, and Trump appointed him to this position.

Clayton, who is from Virginia, has worked as a lawyer in the business sector for more than two decades, especially in the financial sector.

Clayton has no experience in the technology sector, unlike David Sachs, a Silicon Valley investor and entrepreneur.

The expected appointment of a new authority in the field of artificial intelligence comes at a time when this file has gained increasing importance in recent months, especially due to mounting concerns about the ability of companies inventing the tools of this technology to control it.

Top officials of artificial intelligence companies pledged on Tuesday to take a set of measures to strengthen internal control and risk management of artificial intelligence, but without any external regulation that Trump opposes.
