Canadian Defense Minister David McGinty announced late Saturday night that there were deaths and injuries following an accident at a military base in western Canada. McGinty told reporters, "I regret to announce the deaths and injuries resulting from an accident that occurred at the Wainwright military base in Alberta."
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had previously written on the "X" platform that a "serious accident caused a major fire" occurred at the base.
In turn, Alberta Prime Minister Danielle Smith described the fire as "large and tragic" and said that it harmed many military personnel.
But officials did not provide details about the number of casualties or the nature of the incident at the Canadian Armed Forces' Wainwright base, located about 200 kilometers southeast of Edmonton.
While the municipality of Wainwright previously explained that the fire had exceeded the base fence and was spreading rapidly due to strong winds, while fire brigades from several areas were struggling to control the flames.
Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, located about 180 kilometers southeast of Edmonton, is one of the busiest military training bases in Canada, where soldiers train for combat operations. The base houses the Canadian Maneuver Training Center for realistic battle simulation, in addition to the 3rd Canadian Division Training Center.
This incident coincided with the approaching date of a scheduled vote in the province to begin a process that may end with the pursuit of independence from Canada.
