The governor of the Darfur region, Minni Arko Minawi, called for speeding up the announcement of the results of the investigation into the killing of 72 workers in a gold mine on the Sudanese-Egyptian border, revealing those involved, and holding those responsible for the incident accountable.
Minawi also stressed in a post on his Facebook page today, Tuesday, the necessity of achieving justice for the victims and their families and taking the necessary measures to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.
These statements came after the Sudanese human rights group "Emergency Lawyers" said on Sunday that air strikes resulted in the killing of 72 workers in a gold mine in the North Valley region last Saturday.
For its part, the Transitional Sovereignty Council headed by Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan offered its condolences to “the Sudanese citizens who died in the painful accident to which a number of Sudanese miners were exposed in the border region between Sudan and the Arab Republic of Egypt.”
The Council announced, in a statement yesterday, Monday, that Al-Burhan issued a decision to form a fact-finding committee to investigate the circumstances of the accident and determine all the circumstances and facts related to it, provided that it submits its report on the results of the investigation.
On the other hand, the military spokesman for the Egyptian Armed Forces stated, in a statement published yesterday on social media platforms, that “law enforcement elements from the Armed Forces and civil police continue to implement the third phase of the massive campaign to confront illegal exploration for gold ore in the Eastern Desert, after throwing warning leaflets at criminal elements.”
He also added that the campaign, which was launched last June, aims to "impose full sovereignty within the borders of the Egyptian state and protect its national capabilities and wealth."
