A patient suffering from severe friction in the lumbar vertebrae regained his ability to move and walk within the first hour of undergoing surgery with the help of the “ExcelsiusGPS” robot, conducted by a medical team specialized in medical services at the Saudi Ministry of Interior, in a procedure described as the first of its kind in the Kingdom.

The operation was performed at the Prince Nayef Center for Medical Excellence and Innovation, using a minimally invasive surgical intervention technique, which allows surgical procedures to be performed while minimizing the impact on the surrounding tissues, thus supporting the patient’s recovery after the operation.

The medical team relied on the “ExcelsiusGPS” system, which combines advanced surgical navigation techniques and a robotic arm, to help the surgeon accurately plan the operation and guide the tools during its implementation.

This technology allows the surgeon to benefit from planning and navigation during the operation, which enhances the accuracy of performing the procedures required in spine surgeries.

The importance of using it in operations that require dealing with the vertebrae and surrounding tissues is highlighted, as precision in directing the tools and reducing surgical intervention are two essential aspects of the therapeutic process.

The patient's recovery of his ability to move and walk during the first hour of the operation was the most prominent outcome of the surgical intervention, after he suffered severe friction in the lumbar vertebrae.

This result is a positive indicator of early recovery in the declared case, while the assessment of long-term improvement is linked to following up on the patient’s condition after surgery.

The operation comes as part of the first achievements of the Prince Nayef Center for Medical Excellence and Innovation, which is affiliated with the Medical Cities Operation Program for medical services in the Ministry of Interior.

The center works to employ advanced medical technologies and benefit from national competencies and international expertise, with the aim of developing surgical practices, transferring knowledge, and enhancing the quality of specialized care.

The use of a surgical robot in this operation represents a step within efforts to develop spine surgery services and expand the benefit of modern technologies in providing medical care.
