Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that Ukraine is awaiting details from the United States regarding a ceasefire in the energy sector with Russia, after US President Donald Trump announced that the two sides agreed to stop mutual strikes targeting energy infrastructure.
Zelensky stressed that Kiev supports any step that would reduce the escalation and protect lives, stressing the importance of Russia also committing to any possible arrangements. He said in a post on Telegram: “Ukraine supports the ceasefire, and it is important that Russia supports it as well. We are awaiting details from the American side.”
The Ukrainian President described the announcement to stop targeting energy facilities as “good news for everyone,” but stressed the need for it to turn into a “tangible reality,” noting that Ukraine had previously announced its readiness to stop targeting Russian energy facilities if Moscow stopped its attacks on the Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
At the same time, Zelensky accused Russia of continuing to target the Ukrainian energy sector despite Trump's announcement, and said that Russian raids hit energy facilities, including a heating and electricity generation plant in the city of Kharkiv, while drones continued to fly in Ukrainian airspace.
He added that more than 200 attacks targeted Ukrainian electricity generation facilities during the past week, in addition to 17 attacks on oil and gas facilities.
Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine had agreed, “with immediate effect,” to stop mutual strikes targeting energy facilities and related infrastructure, without providing additional details regarding the mechanism for implementing or monitoring the agreement.
There has been no official response from Moscow to Trump's announcement yet.
