US Central Command announced, on Wednesday, that US forces destroyed an Iranian-linked dhow in the Gulf of Oman, after it was carrying out surveillance and targeting operations on US Navy ships.
The US Central Command, Centcom, explained in a statement published on its official account on the X platform, that the operation was carried out on October 6, and targeted a dhow that was monitoring American warships and identifying targets associated with them in the Gulf of Oman.
She added that the ship's crew members were safely evacuated before it was destroyed, stressing that efforts are still continuing to return them to their country.
In a related context, US Central Command accused the Iranian Revolutionary Guard of continuing to target ships in territorial waters during the past seven months.
She said that the Revolutionary Guard continued to randomly target thousands of civilian sailors crossing the region's waters, in addition to targeting US Navy warships.
The statement did not provide additional details regarding the identity or number of crew members of the destroyed ship, nor did it specify the nature of the equipment that was used in surveillance and targeting operations.
The statement also did not clarify whether the ship was carrying weapons, or how it was linked to Iran, only describing it as “linked to Iran.”
These statements come within the framework of US accusations against the Iranian Revolutionary Guard regarding the threat to maritime navigation and military ships in the region’s waters.
The US Central Command confirmed that the crew's evacuation preceded the ship's destruction, while efforts to return them to their country continue.
