A tilted property in Alexandria Governorate, northern Egypt, sparked a state of panic, while the authorities decided to evacuate the property of its residents and demolish it immediately, and notified the prosecution, which began the investigation.
The Administrative Prosecution announced that it had opened an investigation into a sudden and severe tilt in Property No. 27 located on Al-Mazni Street in the West Alexandria neighborhood, to determine the reasons for failure to implement previous engineering decisions and hold those responsible accountable.
According to the prosecution’s statement, the field inspection revealed that he was subjected to a sudden and severe incline at the beginning of this month, which required his immediate evacuation of all residents, in addition to the evacuation of a number of properties adjacent to it and cordoning off the area by prohibiting presence in its vicinity in order to preserve the safety of citizens.
The prosecution said that three floors of the building have already been demolished, and dismantling and demolition work is still underway, in preparation for its complete removal up to ground level, noting.
After completing the field inspection, the investigation team went to the West Alexandria District General Office and examined the file on the tilted property.
Investigations revealed that a previous official decision had been issued to renovate the property, but the residents did not respond to it and it was not implemented, which led to issuing a report of non-implementation regarding that incident, while the prosecution reviewed the initial technical report prepared by the Faculty of Engineering at Alexandria University to evaluate the structural safety and the extent of the danger calling for removal.
The prosecution ordered the summoning of the director of the Planning Department in the West Alexandria neighborhood, along with the specialists from the dilapidated facilities committee in the neighborhood, to hear their statements.
The housing and real estate system in Egypt faces accumulated challenges represented by the spread of old and illegal buildings that suffer from a lack of regular maintenance, which exposes the lives of citizens to the risk of sudden collapses.
State agencies intervene through the Facilities Committees in danger of collapse to impose demolition and restoration decisions, in parallel with determined legislative and supervisory efforts to limit random construction and building permit violations.
