The Financial Times reported that the administration of US President Donald Trump threatened to stop mechanisms for supplying Ukraine with weapons and sharing intelligence information with it, as part of pressure aimed at ending Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure.
The newspaper quoted European officials as saying that, over the past two days, American officials have made contact with Kiev and several European capitals to deliver this message, in an attempt to stop the strikes targeting Russian oil refineries.
According to the report, the American messages included threats to stop the exchange of intelligence information and suspend the mechanism for purchasing American weapons for Ukraine with European funds, known as the “Ukrainian Priority Needs List.”
A European official who received a call from an American defense official said, according to the newspaper: “They are calling Kiev... They are calling everyone in Europe.”
The report added that the White House did not confirm these communications and did not comment on them.
These pressures come after Trump announced, on Sunday, that a ceasefire had been reached between Russia and Ukraine in the energy sector, saying that the agreement had entered into force immediately, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that his country was still waiting for the details of the proposal from the American side.
Zelensky had announced Ukraine's support for stopping targeting energy facilities, but stressed the need to know the mechanism for implementing the agreement and ensure Russia's commitment to it. He also stressed that Kiev is ready to stop attacks on Russian energy facilities if Moscow stops its strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
