Israeli player Sayed Abu Farkhi received a red card because of the way he celebrated scoring his country's equalizer against its host Austria in the European Nations League, yesterday evening, Thursday.
After scoring the equalizer for the Israeli national team, making the score 1/1, at the beginning of the second half of the match, Abu Farkhi ran to the corner flag, removed it from its place, then knelt with his right knee on the grass and rested the flag stick on the back of his left hand before making a movement that simulated shooting.
The referee quickly showed the second yellow card to the American Colorado Rapids striker, just four minutes after he received the first card, which led to his expulsion from the match field, according to what was reported by the “DPA” agency.
While this shot spread widely on social media, opinions were divided over the interpretation of this celebratory behavior, noting that it was not immediately clear whether Abu Farkhi was simulating the stroke of a billiard cue or the movement of using a weapon.
While some of the player's fans re-shared old videos and photos of him, showing him celebrating in the same way when scoring goals, indicating that he did not mean to simulate shooting.
Romano Schmid opened the scoring for the Austrian national team from a penalty kick, before Philippe Moeni and Sasha Kalajdzic each scored two goals in the last minutes, ending the match with a 3-1 win for the hosts, in the third group competitions in the second level of the continental competition.
