- US President Donald Trump said early Wednesday that he has not yet spoken to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but expressed optimism about his performance in the election as votes are being counted. The US President told reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland: “I heard that he did very well, and it is very close.”
Just over a week before the polls opened in Israel, Trump described Netanyahu as a “prime minister and a great warrior” in a post on the Truth Social platform, announcing his “full and absolute support.” Exit polls so far indicate that Netanyahu's bloc has lost its majority in the Knesset, although it still has a narrow lead over the opposition.
However, Trump hinted that these polls may be inaccurate. Trump said about Netanyahu: “He may be ahead, or he may be tied.”
It's still a little early, but I hear prominent figures in Israel saying: 'Wow!' He achieved much better results than expected." He added that the final result could be "a draw or a win, but we will find out."
