“Qur’an 19”... an astronomical phenomenon witnessed in the skies of the Kingdom

Today, the skies of the Kingdom witnessed the conjunction of the Pleiades with the Moon, in an astronomical phenomenon whose timing coincides, according to popular tradition, with what is known as the “19th Century,” which is used by the people of the desert and farmers as evidence of the entry of the Season of the Season, and the beginning of its first period known as “The Season of the Harif,” among the seasonal signs that the Arabs relied on in the past to calculate the seasons and follow weather changes.

Astronomy Club member Muhammad Al-Hazimi explained that the conjunction of the Pleiades with the moon at this time is known in popular tradition as “the 19th century,” and is linked to the entry of the marking season and the beginning of gradual shifts in the atmosphere towards a winter character, in addition to anticipating the formation of rain clouds coming from the west and southwest, noting that the marking season extends for 81 days, and is distributed over several seasonal periods.

He explained that the “harvest marking” represents the first period of the marking season, and extends for about 27 days, pointing out that the rain that falls during this period is considered, in popular tradition, to be beneficial rain for the germination of spring plants and preparing the soil for the growth of the pistachio species.

Al-Hazimi pointed out that the association of the Pleiades with the moon and other astronomical observations had attracted the interest of the Arabs since ancient times, as they used the positions of the moon and the rising of the stars and their locations to adjust their seasonal calendars and infer the times of agriculture, grazing, and usual climate shifts.

He added that the “19th century” is still present in popular heritage as one of the signs associated with the entry of the wedding season, which is of interest to the people of the desert, farmers, and those interested in heritage, because of its association with the anticipation of seasonal rains and the beginning of the germination of spring plants.
