Ofoq News)-- When Nicole Kamian sent a spontaneous letter to Eric Risley, she did not expect a response from him. Raisley was her ex-boyfriend, and someone she had last seen more than two decades earlier, in 1997, when their long-distance relationship was falling apart.
Kamyan then lived an eventful life, as she married another person, had children with him, and then separated from her husband. But she kept a box full of mementos of her relationship with Risley, including photos, letters, and excerpts she wrote about their surprise meeting at the airport in her journal.
“I used to look at the box every few years,” Kamian tells Ofoq News Today. But in 2017, in the wake of her divorce, Kamian's curiosity about Raisley grew.
When they separated, social media or smartphones had not yet existed, so she did not have his contact information, nor did she know where he had ended up. So Kamian started searching for him online, and found him. His last name was relatively uncommon.
Kamian became certain that he was her ex-boyfriend when she discovered that he worked as a teacher in Alaska, and decided to email him since she could not find his email. Kamian didn't have any expectations, even if Raisley wasn't in a relationship, it had been a very long time since they last met, and they were both in their forties.
This did not prevent her from writing to him, but when she did not receive a response, she focused on raising her children with her ex-husband, rebuilding her life after the divorce, and enjoying traveling, as it was a requirement of her work. In 2022, while Kamian was in South Africa for a business trip, her cell phone started ringing, and a number she didn't know from Alaska appeared on the screen.
Meeting at the Airport Nicole met Priceley for the first time on June 28, 1995 when they were both in their mid-twenties. They happened to be on the same flight from Salt Lake City, Utah, to Anchorage, Alaska.
The young woman was a lawyer working for a law firm in San Francisco, and was on her way to meet a friend to go hiking in Alaska and get away from the stress of work for a few weeks. As for Raisley, he was a newly graduated teacher and headed to Alaska to fish and dive.
In fact, they were not supposed to be on the same flight, but fate intervened and changed Kamian's flight path to pass through Salt Lake City at the last minute, bringing them together in line at the airport. He told Ofoq News today: “She was smiling broadly and seemed completely prepared for this adventure.”
The two chatted about their plans in Alaska, their shared love of nature and the outdoors, and their lives. When the plane landed in Anchorage, Raisley waited for Camian to get off, walking with her to the baggage claim area.
Before parting ways, they both exchanged landline numbers and then went their separate ways. Love at first sight Raisley set up camp that first night at a place called Homer Spit, a picturesque coastal area southwest of Anchorage.
He wrote in his diary: “I think I fell in love with Kamian. Kamian also wrote about Risley in her diary. She admired him very much, but at the same time she felt that it was “too good to be true,” as she put it.
Once Kamian returned to San Francisco a few weeks later, she received a message from Raisley on her answering machine, beginning a series of long phone calls. “We could talk on the phone for hours on end,” Kamyan explains.
We had a lot of conversations and decided that it was a necessity to meet face-to-face again.” By then, the fall semester of 1995 had arrived.
Raisley was back in Colorado preparing for an annual family camping trip to Crested Butte in the Rocky Mountains and decided to invite Kamian. She agreed immediately, and it was their first date.
Kamian also got to know Raisley's entire extended family. About a month later, Raisley visited Kamian in San Francisco.
At the time, Raisley was balancing two teaching jobs and Kamian was feeling overwhelmed by her job, so they began planning a months-long adventure to Costa Rica. In early 1996, they made that dream a reality: Kamian quit her job, moved out of her apartment in San Francisco, and then met Pricely in Colorado to begin their journey.
Upon their return to the United States, they both decided to work in Alaska during the summer, but ended up in two locations hours apart. But as the summer wore on, Raisley took a teaching job in a remote village in western Alaska.
Concerned about her long absence from the corporate world, Kamian decided to return to San Francisco and took a job at a new law firm. The two kept in touch, and Camian visited Raisley in Alaska in February 1997.
During that trip, Kamian told Raisley she met someone at the law firm. It seemed as if they were at a crossroads, as it was difficult to imagine their relationship continuing from a distance.
The two parted with good feelings towards each other. Years passed, Kamian married the man she met in her office, and enjoyed the experience of motherhood.
Life went on and it ended in divorce. Meanwhile, Raisley fell in love, married another woman and had a daughter.
In 2017, Kamian's letter suddenly appeared on his doorstep. Unanswered letter When Kamian's letter arrived, Raisley was preoccupied with his marital and family life, and didn't quite know what to do.
Five years later, Raisley's marriage ended in divorce, and he found himself thinking about Camian and that unanswered letter, so he looked it up online. One day in December 2022, Raisley found a cell phone number online that appeared to belong to Kamian, and he called her immediately.
Kamian replied when she was on the other side of the world, specifically in South Africa. It took a moment or two for both of them to realize that they were talking to each other, and the conversation continued for a long time.
“We started having very long, three-hour phone conversations,” Raisley recalls. “There was a lot to talk about, and the conversation flowed smoothly.”
In one early call, Raisley explained why he didn't respond to her message, and talked about his subsequent divorce. In March 2023, they both arranged a vacation to Mexico to see each other.
The trip was everything Raisley and Camian had dreamed of. Within two weeks of his return from Mexico, Kamian was visiting Raisley in Kodiak, Alaska.
Kamian spent much of the summer of 2022 working in Europe, where Raisley traveled to visit her, and they took hiking trips together in Switzerland and Croatia. They then flew together to Alaska, where Kamian unloaded her belongings at Raisley's home in Kodiak, Alaska and has not left yet.
Perfect Timing Four years after they met again in Mexico, and more than 30 years after their first encounter in an airport line in Salt Lake City, Raisley and Camian are still happily living in Alaska and enjoying exploring the world whenever they have the chance. Raisley believes their story proves that “you never know where life will lead you,” and Kamian expressed her excitement.
