Egypt responded quickly to Ethiopia's decision to ask a member of the Egyptian embassy in Addis Ababa to leave the country and decided to expel the advisor to the Ethiopian embassy in Cairo.

In response to what the Ethiopian government did by declaring a member of the Egyptian embassy in Addis Ababa as persona non grata, an official Egyptian source described this action as “unfortunate” and unjustified, explaining that the Egyptian side has always affirmed its complete refusal to interfere in the internal affairs of countries and not to comment on events in other countries, including Ethiopia, out of respect for the rules of international law and the United Nations Charter.

The source added that the Ethiopian side has always blamed its failure to manage its files and successive internal crises on the basis of what it claims that there is a role for external parties to cover up its successive crises.

The source concluded by saying that, in application of the principle of reciprocity, the advisor of the Ethiopian embassy in Cairo was considered persona non grata and the Egyptian authorities gave him 48 hours to leave the country.

In a related context, Al Arabiya Net learned that the advisor to the Ethiopian embassy, whom Egypt asked to leave, is Agazi Milo Brogoy.

The Ethiopian Foreign Ministry had requested that a diplomat working at the Egyptian embassy in Addis Ababa leave the country.

The Ethiopian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it had decided to consider the Egyptian diplomat, who is a member of the diplomatic staff of the Egyptian Embassy in Addis Ababa, as an “undesirable person,” demanding that he be evacuated and leave the country within a maximum period of 48 hours, according to the diplomatic memorandum addressed by the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Egyptian Embassy in Addis Ababa.

Ethiopian authorities explained that their decision was based on the provisions of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which gives host countries the right to declare any diplomatic element persona non grata without giving detailed reasons.

These two measures reflect a state of ongoing tension in diplomatic and regional relations between Cairo and Addis Ababa, in light of the outstanding dispute issues and rapid political developments in the region.

The Ethiopian escalation came days after another escalation, as Cairo responded with three words that read, “It and nothing are the same” to accusations directed by the Ethiopian army commander against Egypt of supporting armed groups fighting government forces in Ethiopia.

The official account of Ambassador Nader Zaki, the official spokesman for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, published a message in which he stressed that Egyptian foreign policy is based on firm and indivisible principles, foremost of which is respect for the sovereignty of countries, the unity and integrity of their territories, and a full commitment not to interfere in the internal affairs of any country. He added, “Therefore, any allegations that question Egypt’s commitment to these established principles are null and void.”

The Egyptian diplomatic move came after sharp statements by the Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian Army, Field Marshal Berhanu Jula, in which he accused Egypt, Sudan, and Eritrea of providing support to armed groups fighting government forces in northern Ethiopia, considering that his forces are engaged in confrontations against organized and allied parties to serve the interests of external forces targeting his country.
