The British Maritime Trade Operations Authority (UKMTO) announced that a tanker was hit by an unknown projectile while sailing in the Strait of Hormuz, causing damage to the engine room, while no injuries among crew members or environmental effects have been recorded so far.
The authority said that the authorities are investigating the circumstances of the incident, without specifying the source of the projectile or the party responsible for launching it.
The incident comes in light of the repeated incidents targeting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz in recent weeks, as the British Maritime Trade Operations Authority recorded several reports of tankers and ships being hit by unknown projectiles, including incidents that led to the outbreak of fires or material damage and injuries among crews. Reuters reported on October 3 that a crude oil tanker was also hit by an unknown projectile about 4 nautical miles east of Oman, while the British Maritime Trade Operations Authority reported that all crew members were fine and no environmental effects were recorded from the incident.
On the same day, another oil tanker reported being hit by an unknown projectile on the left side about 4 nautical miles east of Oman, while the authority confirmed the safety of the crew members and that there were no environmental effects of the accident.
The risks to navigation escalated after it was reported on September 30 that three oil tankers flying the Liberian flag were exposed to unknown projectiles while crossing Hormuz, while the source of the projectiles or the party responsible for them was not independently determined, according to Reuters.
