From the irony of the ballot boxes... Democrats are courting young people digitally

With sarcastic clips, sharp confrontations, and messages that borrow the language of social networking sites, Democrats are seeking to regain the attention of young people before the US midterm elections. The bet begins with attracting the voter while browsing, in the hope that interaction with the screen will turn into participation in the ballot.

The party uses clips of debates, digital arguments, and popular content to reach young people who have turned away from it in the 2024 elections, and to compete with Republicans in the spaces they follow daily.

Publications from the Democratic National Committee have shown how this strategy translates into practice. The video team followed trending topics, songs, and popular positions, looking for a way to connect them to the news and attack the policies of President Donald Trump's administration.

In a presentation published by the team in August, the two women responsible for producing this content said that the goal is to reach young people who may not be interested in politics at all. Therefore, the team spends time following up on what users are talking about, so that its posts appear consistent with the nature of the platform and the language of its audience.

The party also cited, as an example, a clip that brought together democratic figures to the beat of a popular song and achieved, according to its data at the time, 4.4 million views.

He also turned a previous clip of Trump insulting a journalist into a question game inspired by an educational platform familiar to young people, and said that it received 45 million views. These are numbers announced by the party to measure the spread of its content, and are not a direct indicator of electoral gains.

In parallel with satirical clips, Democrats have worked to build a network of content creators, allowing their messages to be presented in voices that audiences know and follow outside of traditional political accounts.

In June, the committee's influencer partnerships officer, Matt Ryan, announced that the program's main communication group had expanded from 25 content creators when it was reactivated in mid-2025 to 550, with a total of more than 75 million followers.

The plan included providing them with daily clips and guidance, connecting them with elected officials, and expanding cooperation to include the areas of sports and lifestyle, as well as politics and news. The party set a goal of communicating with ten thousand content makers by the end of November 2026, to build a presence that will continue after the current elections.

The party also launched "Fact Post" accounts to publish news, clips, and information graphics and respond to the administration, benefiting from the experiences of former members of the Kamala Harris campaign accounts team.

This move comes in an environment where influencers are increasingly important as a source of news. According to data from a survey conducted in 2025, 38 percent of Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 receive news regularly from influencers, compared to 8 percent of those aged 65 and over.

But Republicans downplayed the impact of this strategy, believing that harsh posts would not change young people's attitudes toward Democratic politics.

The electoral test remains different from the viral test: the clip may succeed in stopping browsing and attracting comments, while converting this attention into votes requires convincing the voter of the candidate, and then pushing him to actually participate.
