The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) announced the displacement of about 79,000 children in western Yemen as a result of the third military escalation since last September.
The United Nations stated, in a report published on the
The organization indicated that the battles in Taiz, Hodeidah, the western coast and the surrounding areas forced families to be displaced again, leaving behind their homes, property, and sources of livelihood.
She noted that "between September 3 and September 28, more than 145,000 people were displaced, including an estimated 79,000 children."
UNICEF warned: “This latest escalation coincides with a difficult humanitarian reality in a country whose humanitarian needs are among the highest in the world.”
She indicated that "there are more than 12 million children in Yemen in need of humanitarian assistance, while health and educational services and access to safe water have been damaged due to the conflict."
Regarding the humanitarian situation of the displaced in Taiz Governorate, western Yemen, the report explained that “there are families residing in crowded camps with limited access to clean water, health care, and other basic services. Many families arrived with nothing but the clothes their members were wearing.”
The UN report stressed that "as the conflict continues to displace families across western Yemen, humanitarian aid remains an essential lifeline for children and family members who have already suffered years of displacement, disruption of education and health services, and loss of sources of income."
It is noteworthy that since the beginning of last September, the intensity of confrontations between government forces and the Houthis has escalated in several regions of western Yemen, leading to deaths and injuries and the displacement of large numbers of citizens, in a country facing one of the worst humanitarian and economic crises in the world.
