Saudi Arabia topped the list of countries participating in World Space Week, out of 102 countries around the world, driven by broad national participation that included about 36,000 schools and 31 universities, according to a report by the World Space Week Organization (WSWA).
The participation came in cooperation between the Saudi Space Agency and the Ministry of Education, in one of the largest space science awareness campaigns, through activities that extended to schools, universities, libraries and public sites in various regions of the Kingdom.
The activities targeted students, youth, and various segments of society, with the aim of expanding knowledge of space sciences and enhancing interest in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to about 36,000 schools and 31 universities.
The wide spread of events contributed to moving Space Week from the scope of specialized activities to multiple educational and community spaces, thus expanding the circle of access to scientific and awareness-raising content.
The Saudi participation extended to the work of the 63rd session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, at the United Nations Headquarters in Vienna.
The Executive Director of the World Space Week Association, Dr. Alma Okpalevi, highlighted the Saudi experience, noting that the integration between the Saudi Space Agency and the Ministry of Education contributed to achieving a wide spread of the campaign throughout the Kingdom.
The Saudi experience also presented a model that can be used to expand awareness of space sciences and enhance education in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
