In the early hours of Wednesday morning, the Alexandria Governorate in Egypt witnessed the collapse of an inhabited residential property, resulting in casualties and injuries, and the detention of a family beneath the rubble.

A video clip circulated from one of the site's surveillance cameras showed the moment the inhabited property on Saad Zaghloul Street, off Al-Tara'a Al-Mardoumah Street, consisting of a ground floor and four upper floors, suddenly collapsed, amidst the astonishment of the people.

Residents rushed to the site of the collapsed property in an attempt to rescue its residents, while ambulances and security authorities rushed to the site of the accident to take urgent measures and recover the victims.

The collapse of the property resulted in the death of two people and the injury of two others, amid urgent action by the executive and security agencies and civil protection forces, who moved to the site of the accident to deal with the effects of the collapse and search for survivors beneath the rubble.

According to local media, it was found that the ground and first floors were empty of residents, while the collapse resulted in the detention of a family of three members on the third floor, where rescue teams were able to save two of them, while two other bodies were found under the rubble.

The Governor of Alexandria and the Director of Alexandria Security moved to the site of the accident, to follow up on the repercussions of the fall of the property in the Sharq neighborhood, where the governor directed that comprehensive health care be provided to the injured.

The governor also directed the formation of an engineering committee and the evacuation of neighboring properties in order to preserve the safety of citizens, as two neighboring properties containing 8 families were evacuated, while providing a temporary alternative for them as part of precautionary measures.

It is noteworthy that, according to semi-official statistics, the Egyptian governorates witnessed more than 800 incidents of complete and partial real estate collapse during the last seven years, claiming the lives of more than 550 people.

Alexandria Governorate also topped the list with a percentage of nearly 25% of the total collapses in Egypt, followed by the neighborhoods of Old Cairo and Giza.

Parliamentary estimates indicate that there are approximately 97,000 to 100,000 properties nationwide that are threatened with immediate collapse and for which demolition or restoration decisions have not yet been implemented.
