Iran announced on Saturday the execution of a death sentence against a man convicted of several charges, including shooting police officers during anti-government protests at the beginning of the year.

Siavush Jamshidi was accused of targeting security personnel during the protests that broke out in late December against the backdrop of rising costs of living, before quickly turning into widespread anti-government demonstrations that peaked on January 8 and 9.

Since then, arrests and executions have increased in Iran, whether against the backdrop of war or protests.

The judiciary said: “Jamshidi was sentenced to death on charges of banditry through... shooting, in addition to conspiracy and collusion against national security.”

For its part, the judiciary's Mizan Online website reported that he was also convicted of crimes unrelated to the protests, including "fraud, threats, theft, and possession and carrying of an illegal military weapon."

Other charges included "complicity in a kidnapping, brandishing a weapon to intimidate and intentionally causing bodily harm."

The website indicated that Jamshidi was an "activist" during the demonstrations of December last year.

During these protests, the Iranian authorities announced the death of more than three thousand people, most of them security personnel, and attributed the violence to “terrorist acts” orchestrated by the United States and Israel, while non-governmental organizations based outside Iran confirm that the security forces opened fire on the demonstrators, noting that thousands were killed.

During the year 2025, Iran carried out death sentences against at least 1,639 people, the highest annual number since 1989, according to the organizations “Human Rights in Iran” and “Together Against the Death Penalty.”

According to Amnesty International, Iran ranks second in the world in terms of the number of executions, after China.
