On Sunday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi affirmed to the head of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, the steadfastness of Cairo’s position in support of Sudan’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing the need to preserve the unity of its national institutions.

This came during a meeting between Sisi and Al-Burhan in the city of New Alamein, on the sidelines of the eighth mid-year coordination meeting of the African Union, according to a statement by the Egyptian presidency.

Egyptian presidential spokesman Mohamed El-Shenawy said that the meeting discussed developments in the situation in Sudan, where Sisi renewed Egypt’s support for the Sudanese people and its commitment to preserving the country’s unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national institutions.

The Egyptian President also affirmed his country's continued efforts at the regional and international levels to push for a political solution to the crisis and contribute to ending the war, in a way that alleviates the human suffering of the Sudanese and paves the way for the restoration of security and stability and the start of the reconstruction and development phase.

For his part, Al-Burhan expressed his appreciation for the Egyptian positions in support of Sudan, considering that they reflect the specificity of the historical relations between the two countries, according to the Egyptian presidency statement.

He also praised the political and humanitarian support provided by Cairo, as well as its hosting of large numbers of Sudanese who left their country as a result of the war.

Al-Burhan stressed, according to the statement, the importance of “the inequality between the legitimate Sudanese state institutions and the rebel militias or parallel entities,” appreciating Cairo’s position in this regard.

This position comes in light of the continuing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, and the dispute over attempts to establish governance structures parallel to state institutions.

Sisi and Al-Burhan’s discussions also touched on bilateral relations and ways to enhance cooperation between Egypt and Sudan.

Al-Sisi stressed Cairo's keenness to continue providing support to Sudan in various fields, and to work to expand cooperation frameworks to achieve the common interests of the two countries.

The meeting comes with the continuation of regional and international movements aimed at stopping the Sudanese war and dealing with its humanitarian repercussions, while Cairo adheres, in accordance with its declared position, to the unity of Sudanese state institutions and rejects any path that would harm the country’s unity or the integrity of its lands.
