Between the peaks of the Himalayas...an American woman documents her journey at one of the most dangerous airports in the world

Tenzing Hillary Airport in Nepal, also known as Lukla, is a major access point to the peaks and trails of the Himalayas. Although it attracts large numbers of tourists and adventurers annually, it remains on the list of the most dangerous airports in the world.

American traveler Lauren Brady, who traveled through the airport last spring, explained that its runway is very short and steep, which means the plane descends uphill and takes off down toward the edge of the mountain. The airport's location among mountain peaks, in addition to weather fluctuations, imposes additional challenges on pilots on every flight.

Although Brady travels frequently, this experience was completely different from anything she had before. She said in an interview with the Ofoq News website in Arabic: “The trip through the airport was one of the most worrying stages for me.

“When you look out the window, the mountains look so close, it's like you can touch them.”
