On Monday, the Egyptian House of Representatives approved President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s mandate to provide military support to defend Saudi Arabia, in light of the attacks launched by the Yemeni Houthi group against the Kingdom. Egypt's official Middle East News Agency published news of the House of Representatives' approval in its session, which was postponed last week.
According to Article 152 of the Egyptian Constitution, the country’s president does not declare war or send forces outside the state’s borders except after taking the opinion of the National Defense Council and the approval of the House of Representatives by a two-thirds majority of members. In a post on the “X” platform, Parliamentarian Mustafa Bakri wrote that the House of Representatives “agreed to authorize President Sisi to send forces to Saudi Arabia if necessary and after coordination between the two countries.”
He continued: "Egypt will not abandon its brothers, and the Council authorized the President of the Republic and granted him the freedom to decide according to discretion and after coordination between the two countries." This comes at a time when the Houthi group in Yemen warned earlier this month that “Egypt’s sliding down this path will pose a serious threat to its national security and internal stability before others,” according to a letter reported by the Houthi-run Saba News Agency, from the Speaker of the House of Representatives (affiliated with the Houthis) to his Egyptian counterpart.
The Egyptian President said, during his speech at a ceremony for the graduation of new batches from the Military Academy, last week, that Egypt is ready to implement any measure requested by Saudi Arabia to defend its security and sovereignty.
