Iran summons the British ambassador after accusations of involvement in the Fairford base incident

Tehran - Ofoq News - The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the British Ambassador to Tehran, Hugo Shorter, against the backdrop of British accusations of Iran’s involvement in the security incident that occurred near the RAF Fairford base in Britain, which is used by American forces.

According to the official Iranian news agency “IRNA”, the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs informed the British ambassador of Tehran’s strong protest against what he described as the British government’s “continuous subversive approach” towards Iran.

The Iranian official accused London of launching a “propaganda campaign” that includes baseless accusations, and said that these accusations “cannot in any way obscure Britain’s involvement in the military aggression against the Iranian people.”

The summons comes after statements by British Prime Minister Andy Burnham in which he said that there are “strong indications” that Iran played a role in the Fairford incident, while stressing that the British investigation is still ongoing and complex.

British police arrested five Britons near the base after spotting suspicious vehicles, before releasing them on bail. Counter-terrorism police later said that they did not find explosives inside the vehicles, but they did find a quantity of gasoline, confirming that the investigation was continuing.

Tehran rejects any involvement in the incident, while the British authorities have not yet announced details of the evidence on which they base their accusations against Iran.
