The British newspaper The Guardian revealed that Israel is obstructing the implementation of a project to establish an advanced military base in the Gaza Strip, designated for the peace council headed by US President Donald Trump, despite awarding the project contract to an American company more than two months ago.
According to what the German News Agency reported on Thursday from the newspaper, Israel refuses to allow the entry of contractors and trucks needed to begin construction work on the site, which is supposed to accommodate 150 international soldiers, to form the nucleus of an international stabilization force in the Strip.
The newspaper quoted a person directly familiar with the file as saying that the project is still on hold due to the Israeli position, despite the issuance of the construction contract in early August.
The source said, "Israel will not open the crossing," referring to the continued prevention of entry of equipment and workers needed to implement the project.
According to the report, the Peace Council, headed by Trump, issued its first construction contract in Gaza in early August, and awarded it to Arkell International, a company based in the US state of Louisiana.
The contract includes building an advanced military site that can accommodate 150 international soldiers, and will be a starting point for an international stabilization force that is planned to be deployed in the Strip.
But more than two months after concluding the contract, construction work has not begun, in light of Israel's refusal to allow contractors and trucks to enter Gaza.
The report did not clarify the reasons on which Israel relied on preventing the implementation of the project, or whether there were ongoing talks to overcome the obstacles.
A spokesman for the Peace Council refused to comment on the information reported by the newspaper, and the Israeli army and the Israeli government also refrained from commenting.
According to The Guardian, the Peace Council was established following the ceasefire in Gaza in October 2025, and became one of the main axes in Trump’s efforts related to the Strip.
The US President says that he has succeeded in settling eight wars, including the war in Gaza, which he repeated last week in a post on social media in which he criticized his failure to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
The faltering military base project raises questions about the future of the security arrangements that the Peace Council seeks to establish in Gaza, especially since the proposed location is supposed to constitute a first step towards the deployment of the international stabilization force.
So far, a new date for the start of construction work has not been announced, while the implementation of the project remains linked to allowing the entry of contractors and equipment into the sector.
