Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday that he does not know all the details of a potential new security framework proposed by US President Donald Trump, but he warned that reaching a security agreement between Russia and Europe will not be a simple matter, and may involve risks. In statements to the Ofoq News network, Zelensky explained that he learned of the idea of a new security framework during a phone call that took place on Thursday with special American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, as part of preparation for US-led talks between Russia and Ukraine, scheduled to be held in Abu Dhabi next week.
“For me, the matter is not simple, and it may be dangerous,” Zelensky said, stressing that discussions aimed at ending the war in Ukraine must come first, followed by the issue of security guarantees. Speaking about the potential security agreement proposed by Trump, Zelensky said: “I do not know many details about it,” adding that Russia’s pursuit of a new security formula may involve “some degree of danger.”
However, the proposal still lacks details, which has baffled European capitals.
