A circulating video clip of the Egyptian artist Mohamed Mounir, known as “The King,” sparked widespread interaction on social media, after he appeared crying on stage, amid allegations that one of the audience made a comment to him regarding his old age, which caused him to be affected and to shed tears.
According to a media report on the “Sabah Al Arabiya” program broadcast on the “Al Arabiya” channel today, Sunday, the video circulating does not document a recent incident, and the story linking Mounir’s crying to the phrase “I am powerless, O star,” is incorrect. Reports indicated that sound was superimposed on the original clip using artificial intelligence techniques, which gave a misleading impression of the reason for his crying.
The original footage goes back to a concert that Mohamed Mounir gave in the city of Alexandria in July 2022, when he was deeply affected while singing his famous song “I Love the Sea,” and could not control his tears in front of the audience.

That moment came after the death of his friend, the German musician and oud player, Roman Bonka, with whom he had an extended human and artistic relationship, and he passed away one day before the concert, according to reports about the incident.
The clip's circulation in recent days has reopened the door to speculation about the reason for the artist's crying, after posts on social media linked the scene to phrases attributed to one of the attendees, including, "I was helpless, star."
However, re-publishing the clip outside its original context, with an unreal voice added to it, contributed to the spread of a narrative different from the reality of the scene, and sparked interaction among followers, some of whom expressed their sympathy for the artist and others criticized the statement attributed to the audience.
The incident reveals the importance of verifying circulating clips and reviewing their original context, especially with the increasing use of artificial intelligence techniques in modifying sounds and images, which may change the meaning of the content and transform an old scene into a seemingly modern incident.
