Tel Aviv - Ofoq News - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Thursday that Israel is working to establish a huge security barrier along its eastern borders, extending from the Yarmouk River in the north to the city of Eilat in the south, as part of a plan to strengthen security measures and prevent any infiltration attempts into its territory.
Netanyahu's statements came during a field visit to the Jordan Valley region, near Kibbutz Masada, accompanied by Israeli Security Minister Yisrael Katz, and a number of senior military commanders and officials responsible for border management.
Netanyahu said that the new barrier constitutes an addition to the Israeli security system, noting that the project is accompanied by the deployment of military forces and plans to confront drones, in addition to other security measures, the details of which were not revealed.
He added that the project requires extensive engineering and logistical work, with the participation of the Israeli army and reserve forces, stressing that the goal is to enhance the protection of the Israelis and prevent any attempt to breach the border.
For his part, Israeli Security Minister Yisrael Katz said that the barrier represents one of the components of the Israeli defense plan, which includes security areas, border fences, and the deployment of military forces, but he stressed that these measures are accompanied by what he described as a pre-emptive offensive policy targeting Iran and threats close to Israel.
This step comes in the context of Israel's efforts to strengthen the fortification of its eastern borders, amid security concerns related to the possibility of infiltration and regional threats. During the visit, Netanyahu did not set a deadline for completing the project or its total cost.
