Rolls-Royce Power Systems and Makin Saudi Arabia signed an individual license agreement to produce the MTU Series 2000 marine engines, in a step that paves the way for the first licensed local production of high-speed engines in the Kingdom. The agreement allows the manufacture and assembly of these engines within Saudi Arabia, which supports the goals of localizing the industry and enhancing local content within the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 programs.
Rolls-Royce said that the agreement represents an important milestone in the path of industrial cooperation with Saudi Arabia, noting that granting a license for local production supports efforts to build an advanced industrial base and transfer expertise and specialized technologies to the Kingdom. The agreement also comes as a continuation of the framework agreement signed between the two parties in November 2023, which laid the legal and commercial foundations for the localization of MTU products in the Saudi market.
Under the agreement, the two sides will work to develop local capabilities to manufacture one of the most widespread and reliable Rolls-Royce high-speed engines, with a focus in the first phase on marine applications, with cooperation extending to the railway sector in the future. The step is expected to contribute to strengthening local supply chains and creating new opportunities in the advanced engineering industries sector.
Rolls-Royce has a long presence in the Kingdom dating back to the 1960s, where its technologies are used in vital sectors including air, sea and land transport. The company believes that expanding the scope of local manufacturing in Saudi Arabia strengthens its partnership with the Kingdom and supports its trends towards developing the industrial sector and raising the contribution of advanced industries to the national economy.
