The spokesperson for the "Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen," led by Saudi Arabia, announced on Sunday its support for the internationally recognized Yemeni government, following the latter's announcement of the start of a large military operation against the Iran-backed Houthis. The coalition's official spokesperson, Turki Al-Maliki, stated in a statement that the coalition continues "to provide full operational support to the Yemeni armed forces and to stand with the legitimate Yemeni government and the Yemeni people to end the coup and restore the state and its national institutions to build Yemen's future."
Al-Maliki added that "the terrorist Houthi militia's attacks on the Kingdom" and attempts to target Mecca and Medina, as well as attempts to target Saudi ships in the southern Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, "necessitate the continuation of necessary and essential measures to deter hostile actions in order to protect the security and sovereignty of the Kingdom as well as regional and international security."
