Today, Thursday, five countries signed the Algeria Declaration to implement the Southern Hydrogen Corridor (H2) project, which aims to transport 4 million tons of green hydrogen annually from Algeria to Germany, Italy and Austria.
The signing of the declaration came during the second ministerial meeting of the energy ministers of the countries of Algeria, Austria, Germany, Italy and Tunisia, partners in the Southern Hydrogen Corridor project, held today in Algeria, to review and discuss the partnership and prospects for enhancing interoperability with the aim of giving a strong impetus to the project and ensuring a sustainable energy future.
The Southern Hydrogen Corridor (H2 South) aims to transport 4 million tons of green hydrogen from Algeria to the three European countries annually on a 3,000-kilometre line, which are quantities equivalent to 10% of the expected European demand for this clean fuel by 2040, according to the German News Agency “DPA”.
This project is considered an essential link in the development of green hydrogen exports in Algeria, especially since its export to Europe will be via the current natural gas pipelines, after modernizing and adapting them.
It is noteworthy that work on the project began in October 2024 in Oran, where the Algerian Sonatrach and Sonelgaz signed a memorandum of understanding with the German companies VNG, the Italian Snam and Sea Corridor, and the Austrian Verbod Green Hydrogen, to complete the necessary studies to evaluate the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of an integrated project to produce green hydrogen in Algeria and export it to Europe.
