Security sources reported that a missile was fired at an Iranian Kurdish opposition camp northeast of the Iraqi city of Erbil on Wednesday.

This bombing comes after the Iranian ambassador in Baghdad announced, on Tuesday, that the Islamic Republic and Iraq had agreed to “remove” members of the Iranian Kurdish opposition parties from the Kurdistan region “or hand them over to Iran,” while the Iraqi authorities did not comment.

Senior Iraqi security officials have always confirmed to Agence France-Presse that Baghdad refuses to hand over these elements “for fear of their lives.”

Iran accuses Kurdish opposition groups, based for years in northern Iraq, of engaging in attacks inside Iran and serving the interests of Israel and Western countries opposed to the Islamic Republic.

In 2023, Baghdad and Tehran signed an agreement to enhance the security of the common border, especially in the Kurdistan region, and “neutralize the Kurdish opposition,” which led to an end to the ongoing Iranian bombing of these groups and contributed somewhat to reducing tension between the two countries.

However, Iran has resumed its bloody strikes on the groups since the outbreak of the Middle East war at the end of February with an American-Israeli attack on the Islamic Republic.

The Iranian ambassador, Muhammad Kazem Al Sadiq, stated in a post on the

On Monday, the National Security Adviser in Baghdad hosted a meeting between the two parties, which was also attended by a government delegation from the Kurdistan region, according to a statement by the Media Office of the National Security Adviser.

The Iraqi statement indicated that the meeting discussed "ways to address the existing challenges and unify visions among the concerned parties (...) to reach practical solutions that contribute to implementing the terms of the agreement and achieving its goals."

The Iraqi authorities were responsible for disarming the Iranian groups, removing them from the border, and transferring them to camps, according to the 2023 agreement.

On February 22, days before the outbreak of war in the Middle East, five of these groups announced the formation of a political alliance with the aim of overthrowing the regime in Tehran and ensuring the Kurds’ right to self-determination.
