The "Emmy" Awards Officially End the Era of Traditional Television Broadcasting

-The "Emmy" Awards are moving to streaming on Amazon's Prime Video platform, ending decades of rotation among traditional television networks. Under a 6-year agreement announced on Tuesday, the "Emmy" Awards will be exclusively broadcast on Prime Video starting in September 2027.

Viewers will be able to watch it for free, without the need for a subscription. This agreement replaces the arrangement under which ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC took turns broadcasting the biggest television awards ceremony.

This comes after last year's announcement about the transfer of the Oscars from ABC to YouTube starting in 2029. Chris Abrego, the head of the Television Academy, stated in a statement: "Television has never been as global as it is today, and the Emmy Awards should be a celebration that the whole world participates in."

Now, Prime Video audiences in over 200 countries will be able to watch the Emmy Awards live without the need for a subscription. This step marks the end of an era of traditional television broadcasting that has lasted since 1955, when NBC began airing the Emmy Awards nationally. The network also broadcast this year's Emmy Awards, which is the last under the periodic agreement.

The final numbers for viewers of the 2026 Emmy Awards showed that the audience reached 6.8 million viewers, a decrease of 10% from the previous year. Amazon and the Television Academy announced that the partnership will include new ways for audiences to engage with the ceremony throughout the year, without going into details about these plans.

This agreement grants Prime Video another prominent live event amid the competition among streaming platforms to attract viewers. In addition to YouTube's agreement for the Oscars ceremony, Disney will begin streaming the Grammy Awards through ABC, Hulu, and Disney+ starting next year.
