Oslo - Ofoq News - The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced today, Friday, that it has awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to South African jurist Navi Pillay, in recognition of what it described as her efforts aimed at promoting peace and international law.
Pillay holds a judicial position at the International Court of Justice, and is presiding over the case related to genocide in Myanmar. She also served as a judge in the Supreme Court of South Africa and Rwanda, and served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
According to the committee's statement, Pillay chaired an international United Nations investigation committee on the occupied Palestinian territories.
Pillay had previously expressed her support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel, and she also concluded, while chairing the UN investigation committee about a year ago, that Israel had committed genocide in the Gaza Strip, according to the report. Pillay is leading efforts to amend the Genocide Convention to allow the Israeli army to be convicted of committing these crimes.
Unlike other Nobel Prizes awarded in Sweden, the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in the Norwegian capital, Oslo, in implementation of the will of the prizes’ founder, Alfred Nobel.
The award was awarded last year to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, a popular opposition activist who defends democracy in her country.
Machado's choice sparked criticism in the White House, as a statement published at the time said that US President Donald Trump would continue concluding peace agreements, ending wars and saving lives, adding that he had a "humanitarian heart" and that there was no other person capable of achieving similar achievements with the strength of his will, before he accused the Nobel Committee of preferring politics over peace.
Trump had considered himself a candidate for the award, and previously described himself as a "president of peace." He claimed to have ended six or seven wars during his term, including the 12-day war between Israel and Iran, and tensions between India and Pakistan, as well as between Thailand and Cambodia.
Until 2024, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded 105 times, and the number of winners reached 142, including 111 individuals and 31 organizations, and among the individuals were 92 men and 19 women.
Three Israelis have received the award so far: Menachem Begin, Yitzhak Rabin, and Shimon Peres.
American Ralph Bunche was the first to receive the award for his efforts related to the Middle East issue, as he managed the negotiations for the armistice agreements on the island of Rhodes in 1949, which ended the 1948 war.
In other Nobel Prizes for the year 2026, it was announced that the Nobel Prize for Literature would be awarded to the Canadian writer, poet, translator and literary researcher Anne Carson, according to the Swedish Academy’s announcement yesterday, Thursday.
The Frenchman Henri B. also won. Kagan and Japan's Kensō Sui were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, in recognition of their work discovering nonlinear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis.
The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Belgian-American researcher Francis Halzen, in recognition of his contributions to the Ice Cube Observatory for monitoring neutrinos in Antarctica and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical source.
As for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, it was won by scientists Karl Deisseroth from the United States, and Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel from Germany, for their discoveries related to light-activated ion channels and optogenetics.
