- Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of African Football, expressed his support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who is facing pressure to step down due to a failed plan to sell the commercial and operational rights for the World Cup. Motsepe said during his participation in the activities of the Global Perspectives Conference: “Gianni is a very good friend, and a very loyal friend.
“For us, governance, transparency and ethics - from an African perspective - are very important,” he said when asked by Eleni Giokos, a broadcaster on the Ufoq News network, why he supported the FIFA president. He continued: "Allegations have arisen regarding the lack of governance, and dealing with this matter is very simple. If anyone is accused of violating the rules of governance or acting in a manner that violates the rules and regulations, he must be referred to the Ethics Committee, and a hearing must be held to determine whether an actual violation has occurred or not."
Infantino will run for re-election in March during the FIFA congress in Morocco. Several national football federations withdrew their support for him, but according to Reuters, he secured the support of the 54 member federations in Africa after promising them to provide additional resources.
