A 21-year-old woman was killed and 3 other people were injured, as a result of a Russian air strike that targeted the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, at dawn on Monday, and caused damage to a metro station.

According to Reuters, Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced, via the Telegram application, that the Russian attack caused damage to a metro station located on the left bank of the Ukrainian capital.

Klitschko confirmed the killing of a 21-year-old woman and the injury of three others, without providing additional details regarding the nature of the injuries or the extent of the damage to the station.

The Ukrainian authorities did not reveal, in preliminary information, the name of the damaged metro station, or whether the attack had disrupted the movement of trains.

The attack comes in light of the continuing military escalation between Russia and Ukraine, with the exchange of air strikes and drone attacks, which affected energy and infrastructure facilities in the two countries.

The Ukrainian capital has been subjected to repeated Russian attacks since the outbreak of war in February 2022, while metro stations in Kiev are also used as shelters for residents during weather alerts.

It is not yet clear whether the station damaged in the recent attack included people who took shelter there during the raid, or whether the victims fell inside the station or in its vicinity.

The attack coincides with American diplomatic moves to end the war, amid disagreements over the terms of the settlement and the pressures imposed on Moscow.

US President Donald Trump confirmed on Sunday that he does not want to take steps that might push Russia to withdraw from peace negotiations with Ukraine.

Trump said, in a post on his “Truth Social” platform, that he is making progress in negotiation efforts, stressing his desire to keep Moscow at the negotiating table.

In a related development, the Wall Street Journal revealed on Sunday that Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed holding a tripartite summit next month, bringing him together with Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, to discuss ending the war in Ukraine, without the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The newspaper quoted informed sources that the Russian proposal aims to reach a settlement that is in Moscow’s interest, benefiting from the improvement in relations between Putin and Trump.

While these political movements continue, the recent raid on Kiev confirms that military operations have not stopped, at a time when the Ukrainian authorities have not yet announced the final toll of the damage to the metro station.
