Michael Gosling recently discovered that Michael McDonald, the lead singer of The Doobie Brothers, is his biological father. Michael (59 years old) remembers how, at the age of eight, he enjoyed the band's tunes and interacted with their music.
"I was a big fan of The Doobie Brothers, and people still remember me singing 'China Grove' with them, and listening to their stuff in the old days," he said in a recent interview. "I've always been passionate about music, and now things are starting to become clearer and take on a new meaning."
Gosling had hardly believed it since he learned a year earlier that it was the result of a teenage relationship between MacDonald and a woman whose first name was only mentioned, "Diane." They were both fourteen years old when they discovered that they were expecting a baby. “At first,” Gosling recounted, “they thought about getting married and trying to make ends meet and rely on the support of their families.
But in the end, the parents had other ideas, and it was collectively decided that I should be put up for adoption through Catholic Charities.” Adopted by Paul and Kai Gosling, he had a happy, idyllic childhood in Missouri, where he was loved and raised by brothers and sisters.
Going back in time to about 15 years ago, as an adopted son, Gosling signed up with the genetic testing company 23andMe, to try to find out if there were any health problems that he might have inherited from his biological parents, especially since he was about to become a father. The results of all the tests were normal, and Gosling considered closing his file with the company, but he said that he felt an inner intuition that prompted him to keep the file active.
Fortunately he did; One year ago, Dylan, Michael McDonald's son and his wife, Amy Holland, was able to use the same site to find and communicate with Gosling, according to Gosling. Gosling said he knew that Dylan and his sister Scarlett were aware that there was a half-brother out there somewhere, and they also knew that their father had never given up his desire to meet the son who had been put up for adoption.
He explained what happened to him, saying: “He found me immediately, and I received an email saying: Michael Gosling, St. Louis, Missouri, half-brother.” He communicated first with his biological mother, then with MacDonald.
Gosling has long been a huge fan of McDonald, both in his career with The Doobie Brothers and as a solo artist, and has even attended some of his concerts over the years. “I'm still trying to process the whole thing,” he said.
Even after a year, I still wake up and the first thing that comes to my mind is that I'm waking up from a really crazy dream... I still have that feeling to this day.”
MacDonald told WSMV, Channel 4 in Nashville, Tennessee, which cooperates with the Ofoq News network, that he had been carrying a feeling of guilt about the adoption issue for years, before he finally contacted Gosling in 2025. He added: “But just knowing that he is fine, and that he lived a good life...
"A life that I certainly couldn't have given him at that point in my life, it was a huge bonus." Father and son are thrilled to have the same name, despite the fact that Gosling did not have a name at the time of the closed adoption process, and his adoptive parents had no idea who his biological parents were.
Gosling currently lives in a state of happiness and pride in his relationship with his biological parents, and he praises them, describing them as two wonderful people. He also wishes that his father, Paul, were still alive to witness this large and beautiful extended family that they have now formed together. In addition to MacDonald's talent, Gosling noted that he found in him a person with humor, intelligence, and kindness, explaining that they share the same passion for supporting adoption issues. That's one reason they're happy to be speaking out publicly now, hoping the interest in their story will shed light on the issue.
They also share a love of music, as Gosling plays a little guitar and also sings. When he was asked about the level of his singing performance, he laughed, noting that his voice was completely different from MacDonald’s voice. He said, laughing, “I did not inherit that voice...
