Lieutenant General Kamel Al-Wazir, Egyptian Minister of Transport, confirmed that the Al-Arish-Taba railway development project comes as a continuation of the state’s comprehensive efforts to develop the Sinai Peninsula and effectively reintegrate it into the national transportation network that connects it to all parts of the Republic.
The Egyptian Minister stressed, in statements to his country's official television yesterday, Wednesday, that Egypt's implementation of railway projects on its territory is an exercise of its inherent right to development, and does not involve any attack on anyone.
In response to the Israelis' anger at the Sinai railways, he said: "Why are they upset? We went and did something for them. This is our land and we have the right to develop it. Is the diameter causing fire?"
The Minister of Transport explained that the state is exercising its inherent right to develop its national lands and develop its infrastructure for the benefit of its people, noting that during his tenure as head of the Armed Forces Engineering Authority, the state implemented current projects such as digging the new Suez Canal and constructing tunnels under the canal, which are projects that contributed to linking Sinai to the motherland, in parallel with the establishment of the modern road network.
He added that these projects returned Sinai to the top of national development priorities, and strengthened among modern generations the sense of belonging and integration with all parts of the country.
He added that after assuming the portfolio of the Ministry of Transport, and under the guidance of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and in cooperation with government agencies, the Sinai train was successfully restarted via the Al-Ferdan Bridge line, which is a pivotal step in supporting comprehensive development efforts in the region.
He pointed out that the Al-Arish-Taba line will contribute to reviving the economic movement in Sinai by directly linking the port of Al-Arish on the Mediterranean Sea to the port of Taba on the Red Sea, allowing the transport of goods and facilitating the movement of intra-Arab trade, as well as accommodating the trade movement coming from India and China through the Arab Gulf countries.
He said that this line will form a new logistical corridor that transports trade movement through Aqaba and Taba to Al-Arish, stressing that railway lines are tools intended for construction, development, and the transportation of passengers and goods, and not for military operations.
The project to establish a railway network in Sinai has sparked rising waves of controversy and anxiety within Israeli media and political circles.
According to Hebrew press reports, Tel Aviv views the railway network project extending 500 kilometers from Al-Ferdan to Al-Arish and Taba as a transformation that goes beyond the limits of civil development, and claimed that it carries dimensions that enhance military logistical capabilities and transport supplies quickly in times of crises, linking it to the expansions of Al-Arish port and airport.
On the other hand, the Egyptian authorities affirm that the comprehensive development of Sinai is an inherent sovereign right within its national borders to connect the region to the valley and change the population map. The Ministry of Transport explained that the railway line mainly aims to connect industrial complexes and mining areas with sea ports and the national transport network to facilitate the movement of international and regional trade, as the first section between Al-Fardan and Bir al-Abd, with a length of 100 km, has already been developed and operated, and work is being completed to extend the line east and south.
Egyptian experts and military personnel refuted the claims of the Israeli media, stressing in previous statements to Al-Arabiya.net and Al-Hadath.net that they are attempts to mislead internal public opinion and justify subjective concerns before Israeli public opinion.
The experts explained that reconstructing Sinai and linking it to the valley represents Cairo’s first strategic option to protect its eastern borders and establish stability. Developing the region and building its infrastructure block the path to any future ambitions, stressing that Egypt continues to implement its developmental plans without paying attention to these repeated complaints.
