Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Chairman of the Sovereignty Council of Sudan, announced on Thursday that he had sent a letter to US President Donald Trump, in which he affirmed his government’s commitment to the peace efforts sponsored by the Trump administration. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan said in a post on his official account on the “X” platform, formerly Twitter, on Thursday evening: “I sent a message to US President Donald Trump, expressing Sudan’s commitment to the efforts to achieve peace sponsored by the United States.”
Al-Burhan added, "The government of Sudan is ready to work in good faith with all parties to achieve a just and lasting peace that preserves our sovereignty, the unity and integrity of our lands, and the dignity of our people." Since April 2023, two of Sudan's most powerful generals - Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who leads the Sudanese Armed Forces, and his former ally Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as "Hemedti", commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces - have been engaged in a bloody struggle for control of the country divided between their strongholds.
The American Embassy in Sudan recently expressed its deep concern about the statements of the head of the ruling Sovereignty Council in Sudan, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, in which he said that Sudan will not accept a truce or ceasefire as long as the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces remain present. The US Embassy in Sudan said in a post on its official account on the “X” platform: “The United States is deeply concerned about the speech issued by the leadership of the Sudanese Armed Forces, which calls for military solutions to the crisis and imposes preconditions for any truce.”
Al-Burhan had said, “Sudan will not accept a truce or ceasefire as long as the rebel militia is present within an inch of the country,” referring to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. US President Donald Trump pledged to use “the influence of the presidency to immediately stop” the war that has been going on for two years in Sudan, and Trump said that it was “not among his plans” to participate in ending the war, but after a personal request from the Saudi Crown Prince, Prince Mohammed bin Salman, that he would participate in this issue, and this came during Mohammed bin Salman’s recent visit to the White House.
